Faro is lovely and the beach isn't too far, but personally, I'd head over to Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos or some other more resort town. The more west you go, the nicer the beaches get, so if that's what you're looking for, head out. If it's more of a city break, you're perfectly fine to stay in Faro (it is small, but quaint), but I would stay in the central and go to the beach ad hoc rather than the opposite
