U.S. stock indexes are drifting higher Tuesday following a mostly encouraging batch of profit reports from big companies. The S&P 500 was 0.6% higher in early trading, as many markets around the world took tentative steps following Donald Trump’sreturn to the White House on Monday.

Stock markets in the Asia-Pacific region made modest gains on Tuesday after President Donald Trump said he is thinking of imposing new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China.

SLB helped lead the market after the provider oilfield services delivered bigger profit and revenues for the end of 2024 than analysts expected. It jumped 6.1% after it also raised its dividend by 3.6% and said it’s returning $2.3 billion to its investors by buying back its own stock.
