The Phillies released Nick Castellanos on Thursday after reports surfaced that said they told him not to travel to their spring training facility in Clearwater, Florida.
The Phillies signed Castellanos to a five-year, $100 million deal in March 2022. He was coming off arguably the best season of his career up to that point, finishing 12th in NL MVP voting with the Cincinnati Reds in 2021.
The Padres acquired Nick Castellanos two days after his release from the Phillies, while Germán Márquez also joins San Diego.
