Former Carolina star quarterback Cam Newton doubled down on recent comments that the Panthers had "a locker room of losers" before drafting him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2011, saying his remarks were "aggressive" but "true.

Cam Newton won a national championship and Heisman Trophy with the Auburn Tigers before the Carolina Panthers made him the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton went viral for calling his former teammates "losers," a comment many took issue with, including former Minnesota Vikings cornerback Captain Munnerlyn.

Charlotte, N.C. – Former Carolina star wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. took exception to comments made by ex-teammate Cam Newton, who called the Panthers “losers” before he arrived in 2011 as the franchise's No. 1 overall pick.

Newton is a growing media presence who said in November he was hurt when he wasn’t invited to join Smith, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis and other former players in Germany when the Panthers played the New York Giants. Newton caused a stir in January by saying he would not give back his MVP award for a Super Bowl championship.

“For him to say that we was losers was a slap in the face,” Munnerlyn told The Athletic's Joseph Person. “This was a team who was two years removed from playing in the NFC divisional round against the Arizona Cardinals. We lost a couple pieces. We had Checkdown Jimmy Clausen at quarterback and we had a bad year. … For him to say losers was crazy."

The Carolina Panthers the year before they picked Cam Newton with the first overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft were not a very good football team. They went 2-14 under John Fox and fielded one of the worst offenses you'll see with Jimmy Clausen at the helm.
