Microsoft will cease providing essential and free security updates to the OS from today. This immediately leaves all unsupported Windows 10 machines vulnerable to new exploits, as hackers are known to actively target operating systems immediately after their official support expiration.
They’ve closed down these “windows” for the last time. As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft’s Windows 10 has reached the end of its usable life, prompting an outpouring of tributes from tech-heads devastated over the operating system’s retirement.
After nearly a decade, Windows 10 reaches the end of mainstream support today. Microsoft will reportedly release the last free update will go live around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST, leaving the hundreds of millions of PCs worldwide without support after today.
People living in the European Economic Area will get it for free by registering. For other users to get it for free, they need to have updated to the latest version of Windows 10, have a Microsoft account and backed up their PC settings. Otherwise, you have to pay a $30 (£22) fee or use 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to access ESU.
“While RasMan is a frequent flyer on Patch Tuesday, appearing more than 20 times since January 2022, this is the first time we’ve seen it exploited in the wild as a zero day,” said Satnam Narang, senior staff research engineer at Tenable.
