Alaska communities in the Aleutians were under a tsunami advisory Tuesday after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka at about 3:25 p.m. Alaska time.

Drone footage shows the aftermath of the waves after they hit Severo-Kurilsk, a Russian town in the country's Kamchatka Peninsula, north of Japan. Tsunami waves also reached Hawaii, where an evacuation order was lifted after a tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory, and in Alaska, Washington, California, and the West Coast overnight.

Japan's meteorological agency said the quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 and issued an advisory for a tsunami of up to 1 meter (yard) along the Pacific coast of Japan
