The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday opposed the West Bengal government's appeal before the Calcutta High Court against the life imprisonment sentence to Sanjay Roy, who was convicted of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata last year.

A day after Mamata Banerjee expressed 'shock' over Sealdah Court's verdict in the RG Kar rape and murder case, the West Bengal government moved the Calcutta High Court demanding the death penalty for the convict.

India's West Bengal state launched an appeal on Tuesday to overturn a life sentence in favour of the death penalty for a police volunteer convicted of the rape and murder of a junior doctor, a senior lawyer aware of the development said.

The convict Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in Kolkata on Monday in the August 2024 rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at the city’s RG Kar Medical Colleg

In its verdict, the court reprimanded the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital authorities for covering the murder as a “suicide”.
