Air raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv Monday after reports of a missile launch from Yemen, sending residents running for shelter.

The Iranian-backed Houthi militia in Yemen on Tuesday claimed to have attacked the international airport in Tel Aviv as well as targets in Jerusalem. Houthi military spokesman Yehya Saree said in a televised statement that Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport and an electricity plant in the Jerusalem area had been attacked with ballistic missiles.

The Israeli army said an attempt to intercept a projectile launched from Yemen overnight, some 2,000 kilometres away, was unsuccessful. Several people were injured after the projectile fell in Tel Aviv,

The attack comes less than two days after a series of Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebel-held capital, Sanaa, and port city of Hodeida killed at least nine people.

A missile launched from Yemen by Houthi rebels crossed into Israeli territory, prompting air raid sirens in Jerusalem and central Israel. The missile was successfully intercepted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with fragments falling near Modiin.

January 03 as a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the Israeli Air Force. Explosions were also heard in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
