Mark Carney will leader the federal Liberal party in the next election. The unelected Carney won the leadership race on the first ballot with 85.9 per cent on Sunday, the party reported.

Carney has argued that he is the ideal counter to Trump's disruptions, reminding voters that he led the Bank of Canada through the 2008-2009 financial crisis and steered the Bank of England through the turbulence that followed the 2016 Brexit vote.

He was born near the Arctic, led the central banks of two major economies, and is about to become Canada's next prime minister despite never having served in parliament. Climate has been central to the latter part of Carney's career,
