California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday called on state lawmakers to approve a November ballot measure that would allow for a new congressional map, part of an effort to fight back against Republicans' mid-decade redistricting plans in Texas and elsewhere.

Democrats unveiled a proposal Friday that could give California’s dominant political party an additional five U.S. House seats in a bid to win the fight to control Congress next year.

Their impending return would end a nearly two-week standoff to prevent Republicans in Texas from moving forward with redistricting efforts that will net the GOP as many as five US House seats.

Newsom's proposal would see California retain its current congressional maps if Texas and other states pulled out of any changes.
