− Authorities were trying to determine Sunday why a gunman entered a hospital, opened fire and took a hostage before he was killed in a shootout with police that left an officer dead.

Officials said the gunman was fatally shot by the police and that two officers and three staff members at UPMC Memorial hospital in York County, Pa., were wounded but were in stable condition.

The shooter has been identified as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz. He allegedly entered the hospital with a handgun and zip ties.
