How to acquire and keep an edge on your flint stones.
Sep 16, 2018 · From an earlier post about flint-knapping, should be relevant here as well, depending on how big your flint is. Smaller flint requires a smaller than "goose-egg" stone. I prefer a heavier striker and can often resharpen a flint using the top of striker as a knapping tool. I'll try to help what I can. I'm sure there are others here more experienced.

May 16, 2012 · At the last show I went to I found a dealer with some rather low end chert marked "Ohio Flint" in an old plastic bin under the table. I got two pieces a little bigger than baseballs for $2. The stuff is fine for fire kits but mot the best for knapping.

Feb 16, 2013 · Really wanting to try flint-and-steel for fire starting but wondering if I can find suitable flint for this in my area? I live in north Georgia, about an hour north of Atlanta. I fish for trout in a lot of streams further north pretty regularly. Also, I would like some info or pics of what it looks like so I will know what to be looking for.

Aug 3, 2010 · Used to find a lot of chert and some flint nodules in gravel bars along the Brazos, and there is Alibates flint found along the Red River. Walking plowed fields in winter (with permission ! ) especially after a rain, you can find both flint artifacts- points, scrapers, etc, and a lot of debris in places.

Nov 7, 2011 · There is a large number of flint nodules in the limestone that get crushed up before we get it spread on our roads. In our woods, often I will find chert (or flint) in streams, because the limestone is soft and erodes, the flint (chert) nodules are harder and wash down into the streams.
