These babies and their reflexes! This is the galant reflex. Running a finger down either side of the spine will cause a newborn to flex their bodies towards the direction of the side that is touched. It's thought that its purpose is to encourage movement and prepare the hips for crawling and walking. It develops at around 20 weeks of pregnancy and disappears between 3-9 months of age.
