On State Route 120 W to Yosemite, crews have reached Wilson Curve. Elevation: ~9000’. The snow here is rock solid about an inch or two under the surface. As an excavator works a quarter mile ahead, clearing the top layers of snow from the highway, a loader tears down 10’ - 12’ walls of snow so it can be cleared from the roadway by a snowblower. These snow blowers and plows are removing multiple feet of incredibly dense snow from the highway as they push on toward their goal. On State Route 120 W, maintenance crews out of Lee Vining have reached Ellery Lake and are within roughly three miles of reaching the gate to Yosemite National Park. Avalanche risk remains a concern, as does the risk of rockfall, illustrated by these two massive boulders that fell to the road. At this elevation, snow banks can still sit more than 10 feet tall. More than just snow needs to be removed from State Route 120 W to Yosemite before it can reopen to the public. Rockslides fell onto the highway and shoulder over the winter season. Once the snow removal is complete, maintenance crews will shift to clearing boulders and debris from the road and repairing any pavement or rock berms that were damaged in the slides. There is still plenty of snow to remove from the highway as crews continue to work toward the eastern entrance to Yosemite. This video
