The Battle of Svolder (Old Norse Svǫlðr) was a major naval defeat for King Olaf Tryggvason of Norway, fought around the year 1000. The basics are consistent across modern reference works: Olaf faced a coalition led by Svein Forkbeard of Denmark and Olof Skötkonung of Sweden, joined by Olaf’s Norwegian enemies, especially Earl Eirik Håkonsson of Lade. Olaf fell (or disappeared) in the battle, and the political result was decisive—Norway passed into the hands of the Lade jarls with Danish support.
